Paul Brocklehurst is a Professor of Health Services Research and the Director of the Trials Unit in North Wales. He is the national co-lead for Health Services Research in Wales and an Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health. His interests include care for older people, needs-based work-force planning and implementation research. Until 2015, he was a NIHR Clinician Scientist at the University of Manchester and he currently sits on three NIHR funding Boards.

Professor Brocklehurst delivered a seminar on “Implementation as a fore-thought: trials in complexity” on Thursday 23rd February. The seminar explored some of the challenges of taking an experimental approach to evaluation when interventions are reliant on psycho-social mechanisms or are embedded within complex systems. Taking this “trials in complexity” theme further, the session explored the potential of using implementation frameworks and the importance of planning and monitoring the conduct of trials in order to produce implementable evidence.
